Structural Integration
Structural Integration(SI) is the name of the main type of work i decided to delve deep into after I got my massage license. In general many folks may not be aware of this series work by that name but may have heard of its different brand names.
Rolfing, Hellarwork and KMI(Anatomy Trains) are some of the more popular forms.
In general I tend to think of true Structural Integration as a client going through a series of sessions and trying to reorganize the body in a way that will bring them more levity and alignment. This series are set sessions that are already predetermined. The client and the bodyworker will work on specific areas of the body session by session culminating in a hopefully differently organized system at the end. A series is a roadmap or a recipe the way the provider take a client on that journey may differ slightly. For myself I have started to use the FRS in conjunction with my SI work as the main tool of many.
While balance or alignment are goals, I tend to feel that this may be an idea more than a particular state of being. Much like in Chinese Medicine the idea of balance is a constantly changing thing. For the most part SI work, or at least the way I do it now is an idea to try to get the body to reset. Find bigger issues in major joints of the body.
For those that decide to go through the series it can usually be a re-introduction to their bodies. In today’s society some folks have maybe lost a knowing sense of their physical meat wagon. In some cases maybe they never had a sense to begin with.
In future posts I will try to take a stroll through the goals of each session in my particular form of Structural Integration, Soma Neuromuscular Integration.
