Hip Extension - Kinstretch Spotlight

This week is a general flow week going through many of the different FRS base positions.

Kinstretch for General Body Health and Resilience

In these classes, we just try to illicit some ranges of motion through a variety of positions that you may not find yourself in your daily life but gives the joints in question more variety trying to increase each joint's capacity and resilience no matter the position it is placed in.

You can't move where you can't move.

So if you want to move better there you should train movement there.

Training Every Aspect of the Hip for better Hip

This clip shows some end-range control training working on hip extension.

Here I am trying to get full hip extension without moving from my lumbar spine( a common fault in the movement). This portion of the class is after much preparation and other work to the more deeper capsular tissue of the hip.

As you can see I am trying my best to be able to move only from the hip but it still needs work and will be something that I will be continuing to attack in the future.

As in most cases if the body does not have the capacity in particular joint other joints may start to pick up the slack which over time and put extra stress and load in a joint in a way it's not meant to receive said load. In the case of Hip Extension this will usually relate to issues in the spine or the hip themselves or a combination of the two with a variety of joints dysfunction and pain. Some examples of which can include:

Lumbar Spine pain

General low back pain

Pain with certain movements Hip flexion( i.e. bringing the knee to one’s chest) or Spinal flexion bending over

SI joint pain

Sciatica or psuedo-sciatica( this is the same type of shooting pain but usually starts more around the buttocks.)

Although these symptoms can be problematic and annoying and will generally get in the way of daily activities. Have proper joint function in the hip and in this particular instance Hip Extension can also be have implications is sport performance as well. Hip Extension being of more important parts of general movement in the hip.

Weightlifting - driving out of a squat, finishing a deadlight , part of the triple extension that drives the oly lifts ( snatch and clean)

Striking/Grappling - Kick power, posture during standup, sprawling

Running - able to drive more power through the hip in each stride

There are many examples.

Treat the whole system
Having particular issues in a joint can have cascading effects in other parts of the body. This bioflow concept is one way of understanding that everything is connected. Get proper assessment can be foundational in getting to the crux of conditions that someone suffers from. Finding a practitioner that can fully assess the joints such as in a Functional Range Assessment can be a good way to start if you are currently having issues with any part of the body.

The Kinstretch class is a way to work on these findings in a generalized way attacking the whole body to build resilience in all the tissues.

One on One sessions having a Functional Range Conditioning plan to further work on your joint pre-requisites furthers the cause.
